Bikes, Mandarake and Balloon-less Balloon Festivals

Nov. 2nd, 2009 | 11:34 pm
mood: tired tired
music: Hatsune Miku: Mrs Pumpkin's Ridiculous Dream

I don't know how a week passed without me posting anything, because I actually did have stuff to say. Like how last Tuesday I somehow managed to lose my bike key while I was shopping, so that I couldnt unlock my bike wheel when I came back to it to ride home. And so I had to -carry- the bike home (and if you have ever tried to carry a bike it's not exactly fun). Well, that is, I would have had to, were it not for a random guy in a nearby restaurant who saw me struggling with it, and even though he was a total stranger, he offered to let me keep Meiko at his restaurant until the next day when I could return with the spare key, and in the mean-time, let me borrow his bike. There is no way I can imagine anything like this happening in Sydney. These people are too kind. Anyway, in order to thank him (hereafter Ki, which is his name as he told me later) I gave him one of the boxes of lame koala-shaped macadamia chocolates I bought over with me. It turns out that he actually went to Australia for a while a few years ago, as he told me when I went to his restaurant for dinner the following night. (It was a little pricey, but really good. Although when I say 'pricey' I really just mean "average australian cafe price" because I'm already so used to the cheap prices over here that anything more than it seems pricey) Also he gave me a free coke and told me about the 2nd floor that has newly opened where there is italian food for parties and stuff. (I also got the flyer for this). So that's where I'm gonna go next friday for my birthday with my friends).

Wait just a minute...my birthday is next Friday? Holy crap I'm nearly 21 when did that happen.

Stuff as of late )

Pokemans, Halloween Parties and...cross-dressing?

I had a pretty long day yesterday. I was to meet Yuka in Tenjin and then go with her to Canal City in Hakata, but I got to Tenjin about forty or so minutes early so I had a walk around for a bit.
More, such as the stuff reflected in the post title )

Belaaaaaated

mood: sleepy sleepy

Sorry for the lack of writings; I can not stress enough how frustrating the kaikan shared internet is to use. However, it is now almost November, which means two things, a)I hopefully get far less-sucky internet that I can use in my own room as opposed to having to go to the computer room all the time and b)I have nearly been here a whole month. To sound generic; time really does fly. Not that I`ve really been having all that much `fun` this week, though. Remember my leg? Well turns out that it was just trolling me with its `recovery` and it has returned to being excrutiating。 I think that I will go to the international clinic on Sunday, because until then I just dont have time.
Happier things include the fact that this Saturday is a halloween party, and before that I`m going to go to Canal City with Yuka. (Poketards in my friend list; I am going to go to Fukuoka Pokemon Center, so I will take photos for you.)
On the weekend we had another study trip to Nishi-Arita where I did such fun things as not participate in rice harvesting and not go on a mountain hike due to my leg. I also got kind of sick from the bus-ride because the road was a bit windy, but on the plus side the teachers kept giving me coke to help my stomach. We also went to Arita Porcelain Park, which was really awesome looking, although it was a bit late at that time of the day so it was a little awesome looking, although it was a bit late at that time of the day so it was a little desserted. It was all done up like a European town, though...except for this one building where they actually made the pottery and stuff. We did some painting there, although none of us were very good at it. The inn we stayed at that night was far better than the last study trip; my group got an actual japanese-style room this time which was quite nice (it had a tv, for one thing, although there wasnt really anything on except Chibi Maruko-chan). Most importantly it had a good hot spring, which was actually at a sensible temperature for bathing so I was able to go in. It also had a Haagen Dazs icecream vending machine which was pretty awesome.

Oct. 15th, 2009 | 12:10 pm
mood: drained drained

The internet at the kaikan is made of many different types of fail and I really want to hurry up and get my own net in my room already, as I hate using it...
Anyway, my leg is pretty much better, so no problems there. Nothing that interesting has really happened, though, because the classes have now started up. I was dealt a massive blow to my (meagre) confidence in my (crappy) Japanese skills by being put into Japanese 3 which was full of people that had only started studying it the year before or something, and it was frankly embarassing. Did I really do that badly on the placement test? I think it has a lot to do with the fact that they gave us hardly any time to complete the test so I had a whole sheet that wasnt completed; but honestly.... I managed to challenge this, after looking at the class overview which was nothing but stuff i learnt back in year 11 or so, and was able to move up to Japanese 4. Its still not a great position, but I`m happy where I am now  because I have a bunch of friends in that class (there was no one I even knew in J3), it doesnt start at 8:50am (although it doesnt finish until 6:10pm which is a bummer) and it only recquires 1 textbook instead of 3. But fff the classes here go for like 90 minutes each and I`m so tired by the end of the day... plus theres a crapload of reading to do.
I also met with Yuka again; who had just got back from Nagasaki. She got me a present; some kind of bath bomb thing from the aquarium. I`ll probably use it on the weekend.

On Monday I went exploring on Meiko again to find new places i havent been within cycling distance of the kaikan. I found some market streets and had lunch there, and as I finished two friendly stray black cats came up mewing at me. I felt bad that I had no food to give them now, but they walked over to a plate of fish-heads that a nearby storeowner had obviously left out for them, which made me happy.

On the way back a bunch of little japanese boys were playing on the path, and one came up to me with a stick all `hora, sawattemiru?` (check it out, wanna touch?) On the stick was a giant praying mantis; perhaps he was trying to scare me with it or something, so I just told him that it was cool and touched it. I still dont know what that was all about, but it was kind of funny.
Also, I keep seeing little japanese girls riding unicycles around the town; it must be some kind of fad or something right now. (since most are in pretty pastel colours) I have no idea how they do it, though; since they make it look so easy, like they`re just riding a regular bike around.

I hardly think a helmet would have done much good in this situation, you know. )I hardly think a helmet would have done much good in this situation, you know. )

Today, my leg feels better, because I could actually walk again, although it still hurts, so with luck it will be better by Monday. This morning I got the bus back to Youme-Town to pick up my phone, and en route visited the Kinokuniya and picked up the first Maria+Holic. And even though my leg still hurts a bit, and I can't use Meiko until it gets better, I do not care because of one little thing, something I checked multiple times with Yuka and the shop guy to check that it really was a free service and that I didn't have to pay any sneaky hidden fees, as this was the second cheapest phone in the store and all, and yes, it is free: My phone has a fully-functioning TV in it.

Stuff of the past few days

Oct. 8th, 2009 | 03:59 pm
mood: blah blah

Not a great deal has been happening, mostly because I'm starting to get a bit low on money (although I get my first scholarship payment tomorrow and we plan to go see a bunch of things/buy phones and stuff then). The other day however I did buy a bike; something that 98% of the population of Japan seem to use. Since she is red, I have called her Meiko, and use her to get to and from the uni now, through which I save nearly 600 yen a day of bus fares.(I don't think I'll be riding into Tenjin or anything, though. It can be a bit exhausting and since my ass is so fat the seat is uncomfortable xD)
However, riding a bike is a lot of fun, and I haven't done it in years. It can be tiring, but I think it's worth it; and this is coming from someone who rarely exercises at all, if ever.  There are so many songs on my ipod that just seem to sound so much better on a bike too....I will be sad when I have to give Meiko away, as obviously I can't take her back to lolstralia.

The other reason nothing much has been happening is because Kyushu seems to be getting the tail-end of that horrific Typhoon up north you may or may not have heard about on the news. It was so windy last night when I went out to get dinner that I thought i was going to blow away. (Dinner, by the way, was KFC, because I wanted to bring something back to the kaikan. I think the KFC here may actually taste better; it doesn't seem anywhere near as greasy. However, the portions are incredibly small (very little burgers), even though the price is about the same. Also, I am absolutely addicted to fanta melon soda. My sister said it was in the UK as well, although I thought it was something only in japan. I can never seem to find bottles/cans of it though; I've so far only seen it at restaurants in drink dispensers, and as drink choices at fast food places such as the aforementioned KFC. It has the distinctively green appearance of toilet cleaner, but man does it taste good. I am going to miss it so much when I come home.)

Classes started yesterday, although the class today (Crime and Justice in Japanese Society or something to that effect) was cancelled for some reason or other, which is why I am here, netting it up and too scared to go outside in the scary wind.

ffffff it figures that as soon as I get some free time to upload photos my laptop decides to be the only laptop in the computer room that doesn`t want to connect to the internet Dx

Anyway, I suppose some of you want to hear about my first venture into Tenjin, in which I did many nerd things and spent a lot of money. Be warned that the following entrance is full of fantarded geekery, so you`re welcome to skip it.

Trip to Aso, Kumamoto, etc.

mood: tired tired
music: Hatsune Miku: Hajime no Oto

The day before yesterday me and the rest of the JTW students had a trip to visit some various attractions about 3 or so hours away from Fukuoka. The bus-trip was kind of fun, cos I got to talk to the few tutors that came along, and at one point, quite funnily, me and the guy across from me pulled our DSes out at the same time, and they were both pink (it was his girlfriend's, apparently). Although I didnt play the DS that much because I was too busy looking out the window, because Japanese scenery is absolutely gorgeous. And particularly here....everything is so green.

Making More Friends And Stuff

Oct. 1st, 2009 | 09:58 pm
location: Kaikan
mood: jubilant jubilant

Today, our tutors helped us apply for our alien registration cards and the Hakuzaki ward office. Once we have these cards we can do stuff like buy phones and bikes, and most interesting to me, a monthly unlimited bus pass for 7000 yen. If there's one thing here that isnt amazingly cheap to me, it is the bus fare, so the sooner I get the card the better. We dont get the cards themselves for a while but we can get temporary ones on Monday.
I've been making friends with two more girls whose names currently escape me as I'm a bit tired, one is the Swede and the other is possibly the Latvian if memory serves me correct (but may not be) They have an awesome little 2-person appartment that is a hundred times nicer than me and Charlene's tiny ones so we are jealous of them for that xD With those girls and our tutots we went out to lunch at a small restaurant which was decent, although ironically even though it was the most expensive meal I've gotten so far (still only 600 yen), it was the least nice.
After that we did a bit more shopping and once again I searched for SoulSilver. On the way to the shopping complex where there is a 100 yen shop and two electronics shops and a grocery store, I saw the same cat I saw on the first day, in the same place. And then again on the way back. I hope he's always there, because he's cute and friendly and he let me cuddle him. SoulSilver was absolutely sold out no matter where I looked, so I was considering giving up for a while.

Tomorrow we are going on a trip to  a town near Mount Aso, a few hours away I think. We stay at an inn with an onsen and stuff. So, at the supermarket we got some candy to eat on the bus; I got chestnut Dessert pocky, some purin flavoured chocolates that are shaped like purin, and a tiny pack of strawberry chocolate ball things. I love how cheap japanese candy is; their Kitkats are 99 yen. In lolstralia they're nearly $3, and it sucks hardcore.

Tonight, I decided to check the Toys r Us again just to see if they'd restocked their HeartGolds/SoulSilver games.
They had.
I am jubilant.

Orientation and Awesome-Shops

Oct. 1st, 2009 | 06:25 pm
mood: accomplished accomplished

So, yesterday was our first trip to Kyushu University itself for our orientation about the JTW course. Well perhaps not the uni 'itself', more like one of its many campuses (the Hakozaki campus, to be precise, which is where the International office and stuff are). Misaki (Charlene's tutor; Charlene being my new Singaporean friend) took us there by bys (Yuka was busy that day).

I WILL FINALY UPDATE MY LJ NOW. As you should know I am now in Fukuoka; currently I am in the room that has wireless internet because it will take a month to get it in my room. So far I have been here two full days, so I have a lot of crap to say. Therefore I will put it in two entries, and after a cut so your friend lists don't get clogged with my ramblings.

Various Things

Sep. 15th, 2009 | 10:20 am
mood: touched touched

So I just realized I have 11 days left in Australia.
..
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-

Attempting to calm down to enable recollection of past events that are probably worth documenting here...... okay.

These past two weeks, I have been doing volunteer work at my old Primary ('elementary' for you lolmericans) School. There is probably a similar entry to this in the archives because this isn't the first time. Frankly, I love my primary school. It's the period of time where most of the kids are all nice and angelic (they turn horrible once they get to High School. Note that I hate my High School and just setting foot in the place now makes me feel ill. The only reason I have to set foot in it is to wait for mum, because she works there), and it also had the most awesome teachers (as opposed to High School, because all the awesome teachers left one after the other, likely to find a better school. There are a handful of cool teachers left, though) Anyway, volunteer work. I spent the time mostly tailing Mrs S, my 'teacher's aide' from yesteryear. This amazing woman is the one who helped me through school and succeeded where many other teachers failed when it came to my 'learning difficulty' (read: assburgers) Suffice to say, if it wasn't for her constant attention I would probably have been expelled somewhere down the line.

So, my duties were the following: working with these two -adorable- year 3 kids who I will call A (girl) and R (boy)(Apparently, I have the ability to empathise with these kids because I know exactly how they feel, because 12 years ago, I was them), helping out two more adorable kindergarteners E and P (both girls) with 'speech' (these two apparently couldn't talk when they first came to school, so they go through a lot of speaking exercises and need help making various sounds), supervising a reading group with a year 3 class (which was...admittedly painful for me because it always makes me sad when people of this age can't seem to read as well as they should. They were trying, though), supervising more readers in year 1, helping out in the library (Lord knows my primary school has the single greatest Librarian to grace the planet, Mrs Mc), at lunchtimes teaching some kids how to draw, and then lastly teaching some year 6 and year 4 classes Japanese. A bit more detail and wibbliness after the cut for those who want to hear more.

I cannot believe how cute these guys are )

I figured that I should actually make another journal entry once in a while; I mean, my life is not exactly fascinating, but for some reason people do actually read this! And I've left it so long I actually do have some things to write.
For example, earlier this month I went to SMASH. I probably should have said that back earlier this month, but time flies when you are sitting at home being a bum. (Seriously, where the hell did the month go...?) As said before (probably), I was cosplaying Greece. I met some awesome fellow Hetaliatards such as [info]satoru_13 who was (an adorable) Norway. As well as all these other people who I should probably also contact too. -is meaning to add them- If anyone for some reason wants to see my poor attempt at cosplay and didn't get to, here is the relevant Hetalia lj comm post. My (ie my sister's) photos anyway, satoru took better ones. In any case it was a very awesome SMASH, although I only got to go for the first day but next year I'll definitely try to go both days (might try and volunteer at the SUAnime booth again so I get free tickets xD) Vague plans are being made for next year already... I hope to be in an epic group this time! I will actually be Italy next year (although I said I would this year), and will probably get a proper costume for it. (apparently my stupid round face will suit Italy better...I think so too, lawl)

Anyway, back on the subject of sitting at home being a bum. This is because the Japanese second semester starts much later than it does here, so my break is a bit long. In other words, I go to Kyuushu in about a month now, and am now proceeding to Freak the Hell Out. I never ended up getting a job (surprise, surprise) (although am going to see if I can volunteer at the primary school again for the sake of doing something with myself), but I did get a scholarship which takes care of a lot of the fees and gives me a reasonable amount each month.

In other news it is about 2 weeks until my cat's 14th birthday. Then Yoko will have been with me for about 2/3rds of my life! Hang in there, old girl.

And I think my sister gave me her stupid cold. D<

Woahwoahwoah

Jun. 26th, 2009 | 04:16 pm
mood: shocked shocked

In before my f-list gets flooded; here's Generic Response #2943654434:
Michael Jackson? Dead?
I'm hardly what you'd call his biggest fan or something, but this is really surprising. I mean, he's basically the Elvis of our generation. He was just the King of Pop rather than the King of Rock, and now that he's gone, who will take his place? It's a weird feeling when a celebrity of that status dies; whether you're a fan or not, most of us grew up either loving or hating him. I wasnt really in either camps (although I do prefer him before he went...scary), but when someone like that just disappears, it really is a weird feeling. It makes you wonder who will be next. Rest in peace, you crazy guy.

Paying-respects aside, tomorrow I'm going to Sydney's Supanova (aka Nerdcon); the whole nerd family are coming down for it. I've never been to Supanova before, just wanted to try it out due to the immense fail that was Animania 2008. Anyway, I'll be going back with my family to Hillbillyville. No more Sydney uni for a whole year. It's a little saddenning. I went in there today to hand in my academic approval form to properly enrol in the exchange subjects; it's weird to think that it'll be the last time I set foot in there until second semester next year. I am going to miss SUAnime so much; even if half the people are graduating next semester. (kinda sad, that, everyone will finish except me, who still needs to come back and do one more semester next year.) I had great times with these guys, watched some awesome shows and made alot of injokes between and about other members that I will remember forever.

Wooo 8D

Jun. 2nd, 2009 | 05:16 pm
mood: nervous nervous

After about a month of Moeronpan being up, it's got over 1000 views and has made it to 3 pages so far! 8D -kinda happy about that-
And holy crap, the review for the Hetalia figures is the most popular page ever. It gets at -least- 5 hits a day, usually more.

...because of that blog I have hardly any time to post on my livejournal account though. Not that I really have anything worthwhile to post.
I am so not looking forward to the Middle Ages exam, though. There is way too freaking much in this subject. (and apparently it used to be 2 subjects...) My brain cant contain that much information....how am I supposed to remember all this? D:

Also I got my Kyuushu forms today, which makes it sink in a little more that I'm actually going...

although...they're kinda hard for me to understand and I really dont know how I'm supposed to complete them before Friday. ._.

Epic Cafe/Park

May. 17th, 2009 | 04:15 pm
location: Epworth
mood: content content
music: Someone else's music from next door, I have no idea what it is.

I'd been feeling depressed the past few days, and at first I thought it was because I hadnt had any pizza for ages. However, it turns out that it was, more obviously, that I have had no contact with any kind of animal for ages. And ages. So today I went to visit my elder sister in order to play with her housemates cat Jet, and then we all went to a Dog Cafe. It was pretty much the best thing ever. It was a cafe, in a park, for people and their dogs. Ages ago Estelle told me about a place she used to work at like this, so it may have been the same one, but I'm not sure. But it was amazing. And there were dogs everywhere. I have never seen so many dogs of so many different kinds in one place, except at a dog show. But they were all so well behaved and lovely. There were three weimeraners too, one of which was a puppy.
I feel much better now.
